Miscellaneous Goofing Around
Congratulations on your Laser Eye Surgery
Captain Blood and the Peril of Indie Comics A rewritten, rescripted selection of pages from Captain Blood, illustrating the bind that a lot of indie publishers find themselves in these days, and encouraging comic readers to take matters into their own hands.
The Empire Strikes Back: The Deleted Scenes: Something I cooked up a while ago on a lark. Darth shows his age.
Robin vs. 2500 Years Of Wisdom: A riff on some pages of DC's 52, issue #47; pages written by Grant Morrison. The original (Morrison) answer to the first-panel question was Robin giving it a think for about three days and realizing that the question as posed is only words; the goose is free if he DECIDES it is free, since the goose and the bottle exist only in his mind. Which is the same thing that happened the FIRST time when Grant M. used that trope in The Invisibles. But while I can see Dane McGowan (Invisibles) being forced to reflect on this while trapped in the cockpit of a fighter jet, there are just too danged many ways to get a goose out of a bottle in the DC Universe for Robin not to come up with, like, six within 30 seconds. If this whole thing leaves you scratching your head, that’s cool. It’s a pretty geeky idea.
Captain America Does Not Appreciate Your Poetry. 'Nuff said.
Winemaking
I started making wine in the summer of '02, and I've been hooked ever since then.
Here is a bit of my personal winemaking history, some of my favourite recipes, and the results of some moderately interesting... experiments.
Vermicomposting
Okay, well, I don't even remember at what point I thought this would be a good idea. I think I was reading up on frugal living at the time, and my girlfriend at the time loved (and she still loves, I imagine) plants like nobody's business, so being able to combine worms, free fertilizer, and composting -- we don't generate enough plant waste to justify full-on composting -- was irresistible. Plus, worms are real cool. Click here to see some vermicomposting information and links; I'm doing occasional presentations around Sherbrooke and if you need some worms to get you started, just ask!
Shortwave
It seems sort of contradictory to be typing stuff in for a web site– which is a pretty good way of getting radio delivered from across the world – about how much I like shortwave, which, although I love it, is definitely a fading form of communications. I got sucked in by the mystery of Numbers Stations, and got kind of hooked. I now own a decent Grundig portable and flip around every night to see what I can pull in. I'm on the wrong side of a mountain for really good reception, but so it goes.
The Internet can be smart!
The stated goal of Barbelith is to hold the highest standard of conversation on the Internet, and by God they do manage it most of the time. I like hanging out there.
